What Is a QR Code? A Complete Guide for 2025

Learn what QR codes are, how they work, and why they're everywhere. A beginner-friendly guide to Quick Response codes.

guide basics

QR codes — short for Quick Response codes — are two-dimensional barcodes that store information in a pattern of black and white squares. Unlike traditional barcodes that hold data in one direction, QR codes encode data both horizontally and vertically, allowing them to store significantly more information.

How QR codes work

A QR code is made up of several key components:

  • Finder patterns: The three large squares in the corners help scanners detect and orient the code.
  • Alignment patterns: Smaller squares that help correct for distortion when the code is printed on a curved surface.
  • Data modules: The black and white dots that encode the actual information.
  • Error correction: Redundant data that allows the code to be read even when partially damaged or obscured.

When you scan a QR code with your phone’s camera, the software identifies the finder patterns, determines the code’s orientation, reads the data modules, and decodes the information — all in milliseconds.

Types of QR codes

QR codes can encode different types of data:

URL / Website

The most common type. Scanning opens a webpage in the browser. Used on packaging, posters, business cards, and more.

WiFi

Encodes a network name (SSID), password, and encryption type. Scanning connects the device to the WiFi network automatically — no typing required.

vCard (Contact)

Stores contact information: name, phone number, email, company, address. Scanning adds the contact directly to the phone’s address book.

Email

Pre-fills an email with a recipient address, subject line, and body text. Scanning opens the mail app ready to send.

SMS

Opens the messaging app with a pre-filled phone number and message text.

Phone number

Initiates a phone call to the encoded number.

Why QR codes are everywhere

QR codes exploded in popularity during 2020-2021 when contactless interactions became essential. But they’ve stuck around because they genuinely solve a problem: bridging the physical and digital worlds.

  • Restaurants replaced paper menus with QR codes linking to online menus
  • Retailers use them for product information and reviews
  • Event organizers use them for ticketing and check-in
  • Marketers embed them in print ads to track campaign performance

Error correction: why QR codes are resilient

One of the most clever aspects of QR codes is error correction. The standard defines four levels:

LevelRecovery capacity
L (Low)~7%
M (Medium)~15%
Q (Quartile)~25%
H (High)~30%

This means a QR code with H-level correction can still be scanned even if 30% of it is damaged or covered — which is exactly how logos can be placed in the center without breaking the code.

Creating your own QR code

With Simple QR, you can generate customizable QR codes for free, right in your browser. Choose from multiple dot shapes, add your brand colors, embed a logo, and export as PNG or SVG — no account required.
